A traditional Italian zucchini grown especially for its abundant, edible squash blossoms! Zucchino da Fiore, also known as San Pasquale, is an Italian heirloom variety valued for both its tender zucchini and the beautiful blossoms that are a delicacy in Italian cuisine.
The large flowers can be harvested early in the morning when they first open. Enjoy them the traditional way—stuffed with cheese, lightly battered, and fried—or slice the blossoms into salads, pasta dishes, frittatas, and other recipes.
When pollinated, the flowers also develop into delicious zucchini, making this a versatile dual-purpose variety for gardeners who want to harvest both squash and blossoms.
Unlike compact bush zucchini, Zucchino da Fiore has a running growth habit and should be given plenty of room to spread.
For transplants, start seeds in individual containers approximately 2–3 weeks before the last frost and transplant carefully once the soil has warmed.
For direct sowing, plant 5–6 seeds in a 7–8 inch circle and thin to the strongest 2–3 plants, spacing hills approximately 5 feet apart. Alternatively, sow approximately 3 seeds per foot in rows and thin to one plant every 12 inches, with about 6 feet between rows.
