A classic Italian romaine lettuce with crisp, flavorful leaves and large, tightly formed heads! Bionda Ortolani produces dark green, crunchy leaves with the satisfying texture that makes romaine a favorite for fresh salads.
This variety performs especially well during the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. In cooler climates, it can also produce mature heads during summer, while gardeners in warmer conditions can harvest the young leaves earlier as baby lettuce.
Bionda Ortolani can be grown from transplants or direct sown. For transplants, start approximately 5–6 weeks before planting outdoors. For direct sowing, plant 2–3 seeds per foot with rows approximately 12–16 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, then thin to the strongest plants.
